Evolving Neural Networks for Cancer Radiotherapy

By: Joshua D. Knowles and David W. Corne

The aim of radiation therapy is to cure the patient of malignant disease by irradiating tumours and infected tissue, whilst minimising the risk of complications by avoiding irradiation of normal tissue. To achieve this, a treatment plan, specifying a number of variables including beam directions, energies and other factors, must be devised. At present, plans are developed by radiotherapy physicists, employing a time-consuming iterative approach. However, with advances in treatment technology which will make higher demands on planning soon to be available in clinical centres, computer optimisation of treatment plan parameters is being actively researched. These optimisation systems can provide...
