Students of the history of Indonesia have for a long time been puzzled that this country, the world’s fourth most populous, lacked an up-to-date standard work on its economic development. Until the appearance of Anne Booth, The Indonesian Economy in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries (Booth 1998a), the most recent textbook had been D.H. Burger’s two-volume study in Dutch, written in the 1950s and republished in 1975 following an earlier partial translation into Indonesian (Burger 1957/1975). Meanwhile, the study of Indonesian economic history had undergone a metamorphosis. Rapid economic development under Soeharto’s New Order (1966–1998) revived interest in the historical context.
